Mindhunter Season 2 Easter Egg Teases Future John Wayne Gacy Appearance

‘Mindhunter’ Easter Egg Teases Scariest Killer Yet
  • Mindhunter's second season debuted last week.
  • An easter egg in Season 2 Episode 1 revealed a possible killer for the third season.
  • This would possibly be the most heinous subject for Holden and Bill yet.

Mindhunter's second season was the second major pop culture release this summer to feature Charles Manson , following Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood. Could the show's third season follow another recent Hollywood trend: murderous clown?

It: Chapter Two (based on Stephen King's classic horror novel) and JOKER are both highly-anticipated films, out this fall. It is the second part of Stephen King's story of a demented, murderous clown; JOKER finds Joaquin Phoenix in a stand-alone story about the origin of Batman's titular foe. An easter egg spotted in the very first episode of Mindhunter's second season spotted a tease in the vein of those two, but in frighteningly form: the "Killer Clown" himself, John Wayne Gacy .

If you look at the screenshot abovefrom the first season moment when the team was preparing to meet the serial killer William Henry Hanceyou'll notice a "Gacy, J.W" profiled on the far right column on screen. That would certainly be Gacy, who raped, tortured, and murdered at least 33 teen boys between 1972 and 1978. He publicly appeared at events dressed as a clown, earning the "Killer Clown" moniker referenced above.

As if this hint wasn't enough, John Douglas, the real-life FBI agent who inspired Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff), said in a 1999 interview with the Chicago Tribune that Gacy would actually call his office at Quantico, Virginia. Douglas said that Gacy was used as a tool to show that he was "almost like a chameleon,"; an example that serial killers could blend in anywhere, and with anyone.

Not too much is known about Mindhunter 's third season yet, but based on the scene-stealing appearances from real-life people like Son of Sam , Ed Kemper, and Manson so far, we're certainly intrigued at the prospect of Gacy entering the fray.
