- The teaser trailer for Scarlett Johansson's solo Marvel outing, Black Widow has dropped.
- Stranger Things star David Harbour is one of the key cast members appearing alongside Johansson, and his bearded, superhero-suited character is quite intriguing.
- Black Widow will be released on May 1, 2020.
After season 3 of Stranger Things , David Harbour playing a character named Alexei might be triggering for some. But it doesn't matter, because the first trailer for Marvel's new Black Widow movie went there, ignoring Stranger Things fans' feelings to give us a full dose of what the actor best known for his Hawkins, Indiana police uniform (and occasionally groovy shirt ) instead looks like in a tracksuit and superhero costume, unveiling the first footage of Harbour as the superhero known as Red Guardian.
The two-minute teaser trailer follows Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoffwho, met her grim end in Avengers: Endgame in a quasi-prequel solo outing. The movie, which looks very Killing Eve -esque, jumps back to the time period between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity Wars. There, we find a cast of characters including Natasha's fellow trained fighter and sister Yelena ( Midsommar 's Florence Pugh), a villainous-looking figure known as Taskmaster, another spy played by Academy Award-winner Rachel Weisz, and Harbour as the heavily bearded Alexei/Red Guardian.
Harbour only shows up for a few moments in the teaser, but it's enough time to sport an open tracksuit, and give us a general idea of what his character is going to be all about. Clearly, since he says "Still fits!" and "Family, back together again," before Weisz responds telling him he "got fat," this group of Russians with a very specific set of skills were a thing once, and now, after a layoff of undisclosed length, seem like they are on the way to becoming a thing again.
In Marvel's original comics, the Alexei/Red Guardian character first appeared in The Avengers #43, all the way back in 1967. Alexei was a Soviet pilot who eventually became the second iteration of the Red Guardian character, and was also married to Natasha. It's not clear if the movie will follow that same beatHarbour is only 9 years older than Johansson in real life, but the trailer makes it seem more like their characters have more of a father/daughter bond (though, really, who's to say).
More clear from the trailer, though, are the similarities between Red Guardian and Captain America's costumes. From the face-covering mask to the armored suit with a star at its center, this is a recreation of the outfit that Steve Rogers made famousonly with a slightly more rosy ensemble. In the comics, Red Guardian was always intended to be the Soviet version of Captain America, and that is made very clear here.
There are a lot of different directions that Marvel could take Alexei in Black Widow, and with Harbour billed second in the film (only behind Scarlett Johansson), he will objectively have a very big role. As the MCU has shown in past films, it's never afraid to make a Comic hero into a film villain, and it's never afraid to keep major characters around for multiple films. Harbour is one of the most exciting actors working today, and whether his character is a one-off, or involved for the long haul, either way his character's throughline will be one of the most intriguing aspects of Black Widow.
By the time Black Widow is released in May, it will have been nearly 10 months since the last MCU movie (Spider-Man: Far From Home, this past July), so the excitement for the start of Marvel's phase four is real. The movie is generated to get things off to a jump start for the post-Endgame Marvel generation, and no matter what direction the movie takes him, Red Guardian is going to be a huge part of that.
