But we contend there may be no more perfect move than the ab rollout. As Tonehouse Trainer James McMillan shows us—shirt off, no less—the ab rollout is the one thing you should always be doing for your abs.
“You can use an ab roller or even paper plates if you’re at home and don’t have one,” McMillan says. In other words, this move can be done without any special equipment (even though a proper roller is nice to have) and can be done nearly anywhere.
McMillan demonstrates the most difficult version in the video above: standing up. If you’re brave enough to start this way first, begin with your feet spread shoulder-width apart, hands on the roller on the floor, and roll all the way out until you’re flat. Roll it back, and repeat.
If you’re new to the move, it’s much easier to start on your knees. “Roll your way out flat until you build your core strength up to be able to do the full ab rollout,” says McMillan. It’s an easy modification for beginners, and still has the same ab-building capability.
The ab rollout really works your entire core, from the upper and lower abs to the obliques on the side, giving you a full ab workout in only one move. There’s hardly anything else we could want for.
