Everything We Know About Locke and Key Season 2

Spoiler warning: The following story contains spoilers for the first season of Locke and Key.

Everything We Know About 'Locke and Key' Season 2
  • The first season of Netlfix's Locke and Key followed the magical adventures of the Locke family.
  • Though Netflix has yet to officially greenlight a second season, writing is already underway.
  • Here's everything we know about Locke and Key Season 2.

By now you've probably binged right through Netflix's Locke and Key Season 1 (or at least are in the process), and if you're not running out to buy the comic series (written by acclaimed horror writer Joe Hill , son of legendary novelist Stephen King ), or running around your apartment listening for whispers and keys (keys to make your apartment larger than your office break room), you're probably wondering about Season 2.

Season 1 followed the adventures of the Locke family after tragedy uprooted them from Seattle, sending them to their creepy-ass patriarchal home in Massachusetts. Because creepy things always happen in New England.

But will the creepy magic continue? How long do we have to wait for more Lockes and more keys and more puns?

It was recently announced that Locke and Key will, indeed, be returning for a second season on Netflix. "more keys, more demons, more aloha Locke & Key is returning for a season two!!!," Netflix wrote on their official Instagram.

Hill shared a video announcing the second season on his own Instagram page. "So happy we get to drop the deuce," he wrote in the caption. "Wait, Im not sure that came out right. #lockeandkey "

According to executive producer Carlton Cuse , the team behind Locke and Key have already started writing.

There's no shortage of source material. The comic series, written by Joe Hill and illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez, ran for five years between 2008 and 2013. But Cuse admits adapting a comic series doesn't always mean panel-for-panel retelling. TV is a different medium, requiring different decisions.

In an interview with Gamespot , Cuse spoke about the possibility of the series diverging from the comics in later seasons:

"We can't really answer that question yet. I think by the time we get to the end of the season, we'll have a better sense of how much longer the show can go. We've spent a lot of time talking with Joe [Hill], and I think, in concert with Joe, we'll figure out the answer to that question. I mean, it is a cool ending, but again, the show's diverging from the comics and it becomes something [else]. We want to be sure that the ending works for the TV series and we're not just forcing ourselves into an ending for endings' sake. We want the ending to be something that really feels like it's the right conclusion for our story."

Casting so far is still TBD, but we can expect the return of the vast majority of the first season's principal players. That means Jackson Robert Scott, Connor Jessup, and Emilia Jones as the three Locke kids, Bode, Tyler, and Kinsey, along with Darby Stanchfield, as their mother, Nina. We can also expect Bill Heck to continue to appear in flashbacks as their late father, Rendell. The rest of the gang also figure to continue to be part of the story: Petrice Jones as Scot, Griffin Gluck as Gabe, and Hallea Jones as Eden chief among them. Laysla De Oliveira, who plays Dodge, should also be expected to return. Always need a villain, right?

With everything at a standstill production-wise right now due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it's hard to predict when, exactly, anything will be coming out. That being said, the second season of Locke & Key is likely still in the writing process, which can be done from home without any major delays due to the outside situation right now, so there's a chance that the show is relatively unaffected by everything happening in the world right now.

That being said, the closer the show gets to filming and production without things resuming to a previous status quo, the closer a second season of Locke & Key comes to being delayed. It's a far ways off, but fans can be relatively hopeful about a new season of the show coming at some point in 2021.
