Emilia Clarke Drew Inspiration From Dictators Like Hitler For Daenerys' Big 'Game of Thrones' Speech

Emilia Clarke Studied Hitler for 'Thrones' Speech

The Game of Thrones series finale aired last Sunday. Actress Emilia Clarke said that she studied dictators to prepare for Daenerys' finale speech. If I can believe every single word Im saying, the audience wont need to be looking at the subtitles too much," she said.

The Game of Thrones finale has torn fans apart-some were pleased with the show's finale, and others were not. One thing that Thrones fans should be able to agree on, though, is that Emilia Clarke sold the hell out of her performance , particularly the big speech that came after Daenerys took King's Landing. And as it turns out, she drew inspiration from some historical figures that frankly make sense-including dictators like Adolf Hitler.

"In giving all these speeches in fake languages, I watched a lot of videos of-now it seems funny-dictators and powerful leaders speaking a different language to see if I could understand what they were saying without knowing the language. And you can! You absolutely can understand what Hitlers f-ing saying, these single-focus orators speaking a foreign language," she said in an post-episode interview with Variety. "So I thought, If I can believe every single word Im saying, the audience wont need to be looking at the subtitles too much.

Clarke also went into to detail about just how tricky the speech was to give-just as one would assume a chilling speech in a made-up language would be. She described giving the speech in an empty green screen room; everything else was added in post-production.

"There was no one there, just a camera and green and an empty room," she said. "But the crew, rightly so, will be like 'Oh God, lady speaking a fake language.' So theres a kind of disconnect there. I knew I had to be completely and utterly prepared to make an utter fool of myself."

Clarke also described just how much work she put into memorizing the speech. She said she was practicing non-stop, staying up late to look it over for two full months. But then something miraculous happened: when the day came to finally film the speech scene, she nailed it on the first take-no rehearsal.

"The rest of the day it was like Daenerys was just with me. Thats the only time I got through that speech without getting anything wrong, when it was on camera," she said. "If you had asked me to do it the next day, Id already forgotten it."
