Cutting Back On Fast Food Helped this Guy Drop 85 Pounds and Get Ripped

Cutting Fast Food Helped This Guy Lose 85 Pounds

When Shane Ridling finished training for his first job, he should have been happy. Instead, he was nervous about how hed look in the class picture. I was grossly overweight, so I actively avoided cameras and made everyone who took photos of me delete them, the 26-year-old mechanical engineer from Houston, Texas, says. But he couldnt tell the company no, and when he saw the picture he didnt even recognize himself. It was that moment that I decided I would lose the weight and turn things around.

Hed put on the weight quickly, thanks to fast food and video games. As a teenager and into his twenties his weight had yo-yod: Hed diet and work out, then have a major cheat day (or weekend), and lose his will to exercise. His junior year of college, he lived next to a Subway and a Taco Bell. So I had a footlong sub, three cookies, and a bunch of fast Mexican food for quick and cheap meals, he says.

The video game League of Legends consumed all of his waking hours. He skipped classes and didnt go out. He reached Diamond II, currently achieved by just 0.32 percent of players. But in the real world, he found himself out of breath after climbing a flight of stairs and had to strain to tie his shoes. At his heaviest he was 23 years old and weighed 260 pounds.

After seeing himself in the company photo, he cut his calories drastically, cutting out junk foods and eating lean meats and other foods low in carbs, and he lost about 50 pounds in two months. When he hit 180 pounds, he decided he was skinny-fat, and started consuming more calories and lifting weights to build muscle.

Ridling worked out alone, learning from YouTube videos, hitting the gym after work. He did a lot of cardio, including Insanity videos, which gave him an intense 40-minute workout. (With so many repetitions, he memorized Shaun Ts dialogue.)

In about 18 months, he lost 85 pounds and added muscle. I feel fitter and healthier, he says. I don't get exhausted doing normal activities anymore. He doesnt have the upset stomach he used to get from pizza and candy. Friends who I hadn't seen in 6 months were stunned, and it felt great seeing their reaction, he says. His body feels tighter.

It wasn't until very recently that I began to appreciate my new body, he says. As an introvert whose hobbies mostly involved video games, he didnt have a lot of confidence in social settings. Getting heavier made him believe that everyone who met him simply say an obese man, because thats how he saw himself. Gaining confidence is something that I have to work at on a daily basis, he says, and with support from my family and friends I'm starting to come out of my shell and be more sociable.
