1. Entertainment
The key to a successful road trip is to first and foremost keep everyone entertained, whether it be a one-hour trip down the coast or a six-hour long haul.
It's always a good idea for to pack a small bag of your favourite CDs or other gadgets to help pass the time. Don't forget to keep them handy throughout the drive.
2. Chargers and extra batteries
Travelling with kids means constant entertainment and iPads quickly die. In order to keep every gadget going, make a list of all the chargers that you'll need and include extra battery packs or power storage units. Make sure they are charged and ready to go before the keys even turn in the ignition to save fluffing around mid-journey.
3. Food
It’s always a good idea to pack either a picnic-style lunch or at least some bits and pieces to share. Healthy snacks would do too!
4. Pillows
Trust us. At some point, you are going to want to stop for some shut-eye. If you're travelling with kids, they might want to sleep for a while, best to keep them comfy so they are a bit more relaxed. A soft pillow or blanket can be just the trick.
5. Is your car road-trip-ready?
Have your local mechanic give your vehicle a complete check at least three weeks before departure so there’s time to fix any problems that show up.
Checks should include things like:
Condition/age of oil filter and air filter
Level of wear on the brake pads
State of springs, struts and shock absorbers
Vehicle’s spark plugs, hose connections and timing belt
All lights working properly
Battery check, fluid top-up, connections and any corrosion
Tyre check for wear, inflation and alignment
Replace windscreen wiper blades if needed
Check fluid levels and top up (engine oil, power steering fluid, brake fluid, transmission fluid, radiator coolant and windscreen washer fluid
Check that the spare tyre is in good shape and the tyre iron and jack are stored appropriately.
