British-Nigerian artist, Karl Ohiri is set to kick off his first solo exhibition in Nigeria, today Friday May 6th.

The show is derivative of popular 70s song "Sweet Mother" by Prince Nico Mbarga, and thus features a collection of photographs and videos of autobiographical works focusing on the artist's mother collected over a 5-year period.

The exhibition will runfrom May 6th to 21st at Omenka Gallery, Lagos.

Ohiri uses the camera as a tool to reconcile fears, fantasies and desires, taking the audience on an intimate journey of love, loss and regret while highlighting the relationship between a mother and son and reminding them of its universal relevance.

'Sweet Mother' is part of the British Council’s UK/Nigeria 2015–16 initiative aimed at building new audiences, creating new collaborations and strengthening relationships.

Ohiri's points of interest overlap between cultural studies and the human condition and are primarily explored through the use of photography, text, performance and installation.

This results in contemporary works that are based on social commentary and personal works that are often confessional and autobiographical in nature.

His works have been exhibited in locations across the United Kingdom including New Art Exchange, Heathrow Terminal 5 and Tate Britain.
