As far as livable cities go, Melbourne is top of the food chain as it has emerged the most livable city in the world for the 5th time in a row.

The Economist named Melbourne, Vienna, Vancouver, Toronto, Adelaide and Calgary as the top 5 most livable cities in the world.

The Australian city received a near perfect score of 97.5 out of 100, and its low murder rate was key in the city retaining top spot.

According to city Premier Daniel Andrews, the survey results are proof Melbourne really does have the best of everything.

“Perfect scores in healthcare, education and infrastructure, culture and environment and sport are proof there’s no place like Victoria.” he said.

Also speaking on the survey results, Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said winning the title five years in a row against tough competition was a great achievement.

Editor of the survey, Jon Copestake however warned that the terror attack in Sydney could potentially affect Australian cities rankings in future.

According to the report, while crime rates are perceived as rising in Australia, the state of Victoria, where Melbourne is located, recorded just 82 homicide offences in 2013/14, a decrease of 11.8% from the previous year.

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Ranking rated 140 cities in the areas of stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

The survey gives an overall rating of 0-100, where one is intolerable and 100 is ideal.

Meanwhile, Damascus emerged as the least livable city, while Lagos was also counted as one of the least livable cities in the world.
