How to make gbegiri soup

Gbegiri is mostly eaten by the southwestern people of Nigeria.

Gbegiri is a Nigerian soup made from cooked beans. The beans can either be black-eyed beans or brown beans. Gbegiri can be eaten with ewedu and amala. The soup is also known as "beans soup" and it’s commonly sold at bukas but it can also be prepared at home. It is one of the easiest and cheapest Nigerian foods to prepare.

- It has low sugar, low fat, and high protein with enough energy.

- It’s rich in phosphorus and copper, which is good for the heart and other metabolic functions.

- It aids weight loss.

- It reduces fatty levels.

- It helps in lowering the body’s cholesterol levels.

Here's a quick tutorial on how to make gbegiri:

Ingredients:

Two cups of beans (either black-eyed beans or brown beans)

Three tbsp of palm oil.

Crayfish powder

Locust beans

Dried pepper

Salt to taste.

Seasoning cube

Preparation:

  1. Soak the beans in a bowl and wash off beans coat. After that, put the soaked beans in a pot, add potash, add water and cook for an hour at a medium heat.
  2. Cook until the beans get soft. You can start by cooking with a little water and continuously adding water to it.
  3. Once the beans get soft, you can either blend it in a blender to make it smooth or use an ijabe and then use a mesh sieve to make it smooth.
  4. Next, put a pot on fire and heat the palm oil for about two minutes. Add the smooth beans to the hot palm oil and add water to it to make it a little bit loose, but not too thick and not too loose.
  5. Add your crayfish, locust beans, seasoning cube, and salt to it. Cook for about three to four minutes.
  6. Stir from time to time so it doesn’t burn.

Your gbegiri is ready, and you can serve it with Ewedu and Amala.
