Formerly Gongola State, Adamawa is truly ‘The Land of Beauty’. It is a Northeastern state in Nigeria with its predominant language as Hausa.

With mesmerizing landscape and scenery, it would be a crime to not explore her beauty. The state is blessed with a rich cultural heritage that boldly reflects the people’s dress patterns, dance, music, and past history.

A look at 3 must see destinations in Adamawa

1. Mandara Mountains – The Mandara Mountains which are a volcanic range extending about 190 km lie in the northeastern part of Adamawa state along the Cameroon border. The highest elevation is the summit of Mount Oupay, at 4,900 ft. above sea level.

Mandara is an ideal place for rock and mountain climbing. The region is densely populated, mainly by speakers of Chadic languages, including both the Mofu and the Kirdi ethnic groups. So if you’re lucky, you might learn a thing or two in another language.

2. Koma People and Koma Hills – Koma hills which was discovered by a Corps Member in 1986 is located on the mountainous fringes bordering the Republic of Cameroon and Nigeria in Jada, a local government area in Adamawa state, North East of Nigeria.

The Koma people are a pre-modern race representing a past way of life probably of Stone Age, compact with primitive themes and mode of dressing bordering on nudity which they uphold as a cultural heritage. The men wear loincloths and women wear fresh leaves. Koma men are much more receptive to wearing of contemporary clothes than the women.

It would seem like the people of Koma have been in a coma from civilization. Customarily inheritance in Koma is in the maternal lineage. As a mark of acceptance and friendship, a Koma man may share his wife with friends, especially visitors.

3. Lamurde Hot Spring – Constant hot water all year round! What more can you ask for? Lamurde hot spring is located in Gyakan village where the earth spews water that is as hot as the water in your kettle at boiling point.

It runs unceasingly all the year round, forming a large and deep body of water, all its own, and flowing downstream to join another, larger water body. Lamurde hot spring is part of the world popular Sukur Cultural Landscape, which consists of a palace, villages, and the remains of an iron industry.

The place was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999 and has since become a go-to tourist destination I Adamawa State.
