Vogue chronicles this cool girl's trip to the Congo

Stylist and fashion editor Peju Famojure takes us on her stylish adventure through the Congo as she tastes the local food and enjoys the sights.

Tickets? Check! Schedule? Check! Unbelievably cool wardrobe? Check! Yes, it seems Peju Famojure has got all the boxes ticked when it comes to embarking on her epic African adventure. Peju was born and bred in New York and has built a career in fashion. A stylist and fashion editor whose credentials include roles at Elle, W, and Harper’s Bazaar Germany, as well styling notables such as Solange, Beyonce, Leighton Meester, and Cam Newton, Peju is used to rubbing shoulders with the rich, famous and oh so stylish.

However, she set a goal to see more of Africa and started her journey in Morocco all the way through to the south of Nigeria; where her family hails from.

Vogue decided to come along for part of the journey and Peju shares her Congo travel diary with the distinguished publication. From checking out authentic Congolese art to sampling tastes of the Congo, Peju takes us on an unforgettable journey.

A mere glimpse at Peju Famojure’s Instagram will leave you wishing that you, too, were gallivanting from one far flung locale to the next in #oldceline. The New York-born fashion editor and stylist has held posts at various glossies, and styles big names like Solange, Beyoncé, and Cam Newton, all the while living between New York and Paris. So it’s really no surprise that she’s always one step ahead of the curve in all things cool, both in fashion and travel.

Earlier this year, she set out to see more of Africa, starting in the north with Morocco, heading south to Nigeria, where her parents are from, and then most recently landing right on the equator in the Republic of Congo. “Africa is a continent that is so lush both visually and sonically…. [I felt] it was time for me to discover the vast beauty and diversity of the continent my ancestors are from,” Famojure says. As it’s summer all year long in Congo, she adds that it’s perfect for nature lovers longing to take in the lush rainforest landscape.

Apart from its natural beauty, Congo is worth a visit for the culture alone, particularly in the capital city of Brazzaville. “The people are warm and helpful and the energy of the city’s laid back vibes will relax you instantly. And let's not forget that you’ll enjoy all your meals with its blend of Congolese and French fare.” Throughout her trip, Peju visited emerging artists at Poto-Poto, shopped local handicrafts at Marché Plateau Ville, and enjoyed the food and beach at Pointe Noire.
