If you're flying out of Dubai anytime soon, then you should know that the Emirati city-state has introduced an all new airport fee to cover improvements at the long-haul hub.

This was made known by the city-state's crown prince,  Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The tariff would affect most passengers transiting through Dubai International Airport, though children under 2 years old will be exempt.

According to the statement,  the fee will go towards expansion projects like Dubai International Airport's new Concourse D, the expansion of the airport's Terminal 2 and the renovation of Terminal 1.

Dubai is also expanding Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central, with hopes of one day transferring all Emirates airline flights there.

Industry watchers say Dubai's announcement comes as oil prices have slumped to under $40 a barrel, and slumping oil prices have forced the United Arab Emirates and its Gulf neighbors to consider taxes and levy other fees to raise money.

Dubai International Airport is the world's busiest for international travel, and saw over 78 million passengers pass through it last year alone.
