Lagos culture theatre launches officially with a series of Wole Soyinka's play

Park theatre, a resident theatre in Freedom park Lagos, launches with a series of play running all weekends in July and August.

Park Theatre is a resident theatre platform established to offer and promote regular theatre culture in Freedom Park, Lagos, which is in response to the urgent call for more community-based performance spaces that balance the delicate needs of the performers and the community they serve.

Speaking at the press conference, the creative partner, Segun Adefila,  'park theatre, a resident theatre which is site specific in freedom park is to enable the theatre benefit from cultural festivals that hold at the park seeing that freedom park is a theatre and cultural hub in Lagos.' Adefila added that "theatre shouldn't be held only during festivities, that's why Park theatre initiative was formed."

Park Theatre is set to "offer the Lagos theatre community weekly performances in Freedom park" as well as "to promote, curate and manage programs that will service the theatrical needs of the community."

The launch of Park theatre is set "to foster the relationship between artists and the media," according to Adefila. "We have a burning desire to attend to the need of the nation right now, other classic plays will come later" added Toyin Oshinaike, the resident artistic director.

The theatre will be launched following a series of Wole Soyinka's plays which will run at  Freedom park, all the weekends in July and August. The season ends with a command performance of King Baabu by Oxzygen Koncepts on Sunday, July 27, 2017.

Alongside King Baabu is Swamp Dwellers, Strong breed and a couple other intriguing plays.
