Eating mangoes with bare hands is often a messy, slurpy affair that some people don't mind. However, if you want to dice the mangoes for another recipe such as a fruit salad, you have to dice the mangoes.
Dicing mangoes neatly might be a difficult task as slicing the slippery fruit can create quite a mess. Here are a few steps to make dicing a mango easier.
1. Choose a ripe, but firm fruit:
The riper the mango, the softer it is. The best species of mango to use for this purpose is the one locally called 'sherry mango'.
2. Use a sharp knife:
The sharper the knife, the easier it is to cut through the skin and flesh of the mango.
3. Use a cutting board:
- Place the flat side of the mango on the cutting board.
- Make a parallel cut on each side of the mango, right next to the seed, leaving you with two halves of mango and the middle (containing the seed).
- Turn each half upwards and slice the pulp into desired cube sizes.
- Using your fingers, flip the mango half inside out, raising the cubes.
- Then you can cut along the skin to get the cubes into a bowl.
That's it! You can get as many cubes as you want with this method and serve or pair with whatever recipe you want.
