While the Caribbean is known as the home of some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, there are equally spectacular beaches in the U.S.A as well.

Some of the beautiful islands located in the U.S are located on calm, serene lakes.

These island getaways afford visitors the opportunity to explore shipwrecks without the fear of hurricanes or sharks.

1. Apostle Islands, Wisconsin:

The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is a cluster of 21 island that spans 12 miles in Lake Superior. These stunning beaches and cliffs make a breathtaking scenery.

The islands are prefect for sailing, paddling and hiking. These islands are maintained by the National Park Service.

2. Kelleys Island, Ohio:

Kelleys Island is located a few miles south of the Canadian border. This lake is the biggest U.S. island in Lake Erie.

In addition to swimming, fishing, bird watching etc. visitors to this lake can explore glacial groves, shipwreck sites, a microbrewry, a winery that serves seven different local varieties.

The island has a signature drink called the frozen brandy Alexander.

3. South Bass Island, Ohio:

This island could be easily mistaken for one of the spectacular islands in the Caribbean. The island has clear, aqua blue waters, sandy beaches, bars and souvenir shops.

This isle also has fascinating history behind it. U.S naval captain, Oliver Hazard led the country's first defeat of the British navy in the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813.

The third tallest monument in the U.S., Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, is in honour of the battle and the warriors who fought in it.

4. Thousand Islands, New York:

This archipelago bridges New York and Canada. It lays claim to a whopping 1,864 islands; and the smallest, Tom Thumb Island, is basically a rock outcrop with one tree.

These patches of land flung along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River are a scienic and spectacular sight to behold.

5. Park Point, Minnesota:

Park Point is a seven-mile island located between Lake Superior and Superior Bay. Located just off the city of Duluth, Minnesota, it is the world’s longest, freshwater sandbar.

The isle was established in 1852 by Surveyor George Stuntz with houses and a trading post. Presently, it is a playground for both locals and visitors. The miles of beaches are great for swimming and other beach activities.
