Expectedly, the event drew some of Broadway and Hollywood's top guns including nominees Lupita Nyong’oand Sophie Okonedo,media mogul, Oprah Winfrey, Orange is the New Black actress Uzo Abuda, amongst others.

The event was hosted by 2012 Best Actor Tony winner and Late Late Night Show host, James Corden, who kicked off the ceremony by paying tribute to victims of the Orlando shooting.

Leading the pack with 11 wins was Grammy and Pulitzer-award winning play, "Hamilton", which had previously set the record for highest number of nominations with 16 nods.

British-Nigerian actress, Cynthia Erivo, also nabbed the Best Actress in a Leading Role award for "The Colour Purple".
