The Agbada has been a staple at ‘Owambe’ parties, especially weddings in Nigeria. It stems from the Yoruba culture of Nigeria and it comprises of a tunic top (buba) paired with pants (sokoto), with a oversize, usually floor length, ‘Danshiki’ (Agbada).

The oversize ‘Danshiki’ is usually covered in elegant embroidery at the top for a grand effect. The style was mostly worn by rich elites and was made from ‘Aso oke’ originally but today, it is quite common and can be made with a range of fabrics from ‘Aso oke’ to ‘Atiku’, lace and ‘Damask’.

These days, young men, be it grooms or friends of grooms or just the everyday man, are recreating the traditional style to fit the modern times, with variations such as the cropped Agbada and the ‘smarter junior brother’ to the agbada, ‘Danshiki’, being worn a lot.
