Why Nigerians are missing out on timeless styles

Nigerians in trying to keep up miss out on timeless styles.

When it comes to dressing up, one's personality should shine through (your get up) whatever one decides to wear at any point in time (to any occasion even).

In Nigeria, the love for trendy as against timeless, creative looks is king (sadly). It's common in Lagos most especially for people to be 'addressed the way they are dressed' (even with the knockoffs) and sadly the more glamorous and expensive looking the better (don't even get me started on the Instagram baddie inspired makeup looks).

It's sad how the fun, versatility, simplicity, functionality of dressing up has gone to the wind! People are missing out on wearing appropriate/creatively created outfits but do more of show offs otherwise how would you explain going to the movies or going to a concert (without a red carpet rolled out) and ladies dress up in statement evening dresses (LOL) and guys wearing suits!

There's absolutely nothing wrong with pulling out your 'Sunday best' - if appropriate for the occasion but why get all dressed with towering heels when going 'paintballing' that's just tacky at the end of the day (but of course there's a thing as overdressed for the wrong reasons to be honest).

It's the reason a man will tell me "that orange nerd guy is crazy sha, did you see the pants he was wearing" a while back at an event and I took a second look and absolutely loved the flared pants he had on (fun, comfy and just great on him) so I turned back to the guy and told him, 'I think he looks good, nothing absolutely wrong with what that fine man (I remember saying that) is wearing!

We must have argued back and forth for a while before he dropped it when he saw I wasn't letting go of the fact that he was appropriate for the event unlike the others who were all dressed up for all the wrong reasons!

Truth is, he was dressed appropriately for the casual event he was attending that day where a lot of other guests were 'decked to the teeth', guys wore suits (what happened to blazers/well tailored jackets or even a good old t-shirt/shirt over denim or whatever) ladies had towering heels and super dressy outfits for a casual brunch! (Lagos, my Lagos!)

In a bid to impress don't lose your sense of self, if you want to wear a simple tee over denim to a casual do by all means (you'd still get your photo up on the blogs you want) wear whatever you want to wear it's your body, your style, embrace it just fab.
