Forget things you suspect, these foods could be the reason you always crave bedtime.
The following are some of the foods that could be making you sleepy and unproductive.
Bananas Or Nuts- Bananas are capable of making you sleepy due to high amount of magnesium, a mineral that helps relax muscle cells. Blake-Gumbs, MD, from the Center for Integrative Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, says, "we give people magnesium at night to help them sleep." Another magnesium source is nuts, particularly almonds, cashews and peanuts.
Sugary things- The downside to being health conscious is that your body can not handle your occasional sugar intake. Elisabetta Politi, RD, MPH, nutrition director at the Duke Diet and Fitness Center in Durham, N.C. says, "Research indicates that our gastro-intestinal tract adjusts to what we eat. If you're sticking to a low-fat, low-sugar diet, you start to produce less of the gastric juices and enzymes that help digest sugar and fat easily."
Late dinner- Scientists say that eating late can cause you to be sleepy the next day. "If you eat something acidic within two hours of going to bed, it'll probably still be in your stomach and could cause some gastroesophageal reflux," says Blake-Gumbs. "If you're someone who deals with acid reflux often, you shouldn't be eating those foods even four hours before you go to bed." The solution is to stick with non-acidic, or alkaline, foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts like almonds, if you have to eat late as these will not cause sleep-disrupting GI issues.
