However, before seeking professional treatment, you should know the several causes of body acne. It doesn’t really end once puberty ends. Dr. Emily Wise, a dermatologist at Krauss Dermatology, says that body acne is a common problem seen in both teens and adults, which is a result of these four main factors:

  • Inflammation: When skin becomes reddened and swollen.

  • Propionibacterium: A bacteria that takes residence in the skin normally, but can get into the clogged follicle and thus lead to acne formation.

  • Hyperkeratinization: The plugging of the follicles.

  • Sebaceous Gland Production: Stimulated by hormones to secrete Sebum that causes increased oil production.

Other lifestyle choices such as alcohol consumption and smoking can also trigger this skincare ailment. So to help up your confidence when baring that beach bod this summer, we put together a list of the best body acne treatments to yield you smoother, glowing results:

Shower after sweating:

Some guys don’t like to shower in public places like the gym. No worries. Just shower as soon as you get home. Any sweat that stays on your skin after exercising can transform into bacteria that causes acne.

Go to the beach:

Don’t shy from enjoying the waves. Take trips to the beach, as outdoor elements such as saltwater and the sun will cure your pimples. Soak your back in the ocean for a good 10 minutes, as this keeps the skin hydrated and prevents oil from clogging pores. Toasting in the sun shortly after for a few minutes will dry out those zits.

Change your bed sheets & towels regularly:

According to a survey done by mattress company Ergoflex, 55% of single guys ages 18 to 25 only wash their sheets once every three months. What most men don’t realize is that dead skin cells, oil, and sweat washes off the body and hangs onto sheets and  towels. Letting those toxins to sit there increases the chances of acne.

Over-The-Counter treatments:

According to Dr. Wise, “For treatment of mild acne, I always recommend starting with the use of an over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide wash in the shower, this is a wonderful antimicrobial agent that can make a big difference even when used as monotherapy.” Your local pharmacy should have other topical creams and lotions to treat acne. Just look out for products with the following other ingredients: Alpha hydroxy acids, salicylic acid, and sulfur. Each of these substances will kill bacteria, reduce skin inflammation, and stimulate skin growth.

Ditch spandex:

Resist synthetic materials totally, as they trap in the moisture and oils at the surface of your skin, which leads to acne. Choose loose-fitted clothing made from natural fibers such as cotton to allow you breathe and sweat out. Then remove all pieces of clothing right  after workouts.
