There are so many healthy eating myths. For those of you who have made a vow to yourself and everyone around you to turn your eating habits around, here’s what you need to know:
Cut out bread: Discarding bread is heralded as the first step toward a healthy diet. However, bread isn’t totally bad. Quality whole grain bread is a great giver of fibre and other nutrients and can easily be included in a balanced diet. However, you shouldn’t eat it in excess.
Some foods burn fat: There are no “fat burning foods”. Foods such as green tea and cayenne pepper are known to slightly increase your metabolic rate. However, the increases are so little it doesn’t justify drinking cups of green tea and adding spice to all your food.
Diet coke is just as bad: Sugary drinks are actually very harmful. Just one pint of soda contains around 50g of carbohydrates mostly from refined sugar and you don’t need anyone to tell you it’s a bad idea. The best option is the diet alternative. A large volume of evidence shows there is no link between diet drinks and an increased risk of cancer and diet drinks are approved by the National Cancer Institute.
