The recent flood of

While superstar, Rihanna, was transformed into a high-fashion avant-garde character in one of the most iconic editorials we have ever seen for British Vogue, Beyoncé looked like a work of art on the cover of Vogue US. Both looks echo black intense creativity and Black power.

Not only were the stars featured on the cover black, but the team behind the shoots too. After Vogue editor-in-chief , the singer made history by choosing a team of a black photographer, Tyler Mitchell and creative director, Kwasi Fordjour. For British Vogue, the Editor-in-Chief, Edward Enninful in the magazine's 102 year history and there was no surprise that he picked Rihanna for his first September cover.

Unapologetic Black

“Vogue Unofficial” is a recreation of the iconic and historic September 2018 issues of US Vogue and British Vogue. It is a thing of pride for Ghanaians who, still celebrating a show of Black Excellence with these covers, have to recognise the Ghanaian-born geniuses behind the shoots, Kwasi Fordjour and Edward Enninful. This is why Ghanaian photographer, Phloshop, and his team of make up artists, models, art director, took to recreating the iconic looks as a way to pay tribute to their brothers as they take charge of the world of arts by breaking colour barriers.

In a post on Instagram, Phloshop announced the motivation behind the shoots:

"Through our themes “UNAPOLOGETIC. BLACK.” “INGENUITY. BLACK.”, we re-echo all the messages and values carried by these powerful black women on the cover of these magazines and what it means to all young black women in Ghana and Africa. Our shoot further explores Blackness as a symbol of INTELLECT, INGENUITY and SELF-LOVE."

While the make up ranged from natural to mad hatter-esque for the models, as were the original look, the makeup artist was able to make their dark skin look stunning even before retouching. The art director also did a heck of a job recreating the art pieces worn on their heads.

Black, indeed, is power.
