Contrary to what many people think, low impact exercise is actually good, as research has shown that moderate-intensity low-impact activity is just as effective as high-impact activity such as running, especially concerning heart disease.

Just in case you are wondering what they are, low impact exercises are simply workouts in which you stay grounded, they might also a machine.

Low impact exercises are not touted enough, they are simply not given enough credit, and these exercises are especially good for the body because they do not cause excess strain to your joints.

According to Robin Gargrave, executive director of YMCAfit, one of the UK's leading trainers of fitness professionals, "low-impact exercise doesn't put the joints under much stress, the idea is that it's less likely to cause an impact-type injury, such as an ankle sprain or cartilage tear."

Low impact exercises are extremely beneficial and necessary if you are pregnant, have injured joints, bones or connective tissue, have chronic problems, such as arthritis, osteoporosis or stress fractures, very overweight or new to exercise.

Apart from the above situations, low impact exercises also for everyone as they are also beneficial to the state of your mind.

Examples of low impact exercises and their benefits include:

  1. Walking- this is an overlooked but extremely beneficial low-impact exercise. This involves the cardiovascular system and helps burns calories. In order to get maximum benefits from walking, walk faster than a stroll and add short bursts of speed or walk up an occasional steep hill.

  2. Aqua aerobics- It is no secret that swimming is a good way to stay fit and in good shape, however, this is a low-impact activity. To get maximum benefits from any water related exercise, you simply have to push yourself.

  3. Pilates- This low impact exercise is steadily becoming a trend and everyone's favorite. Not only does it work your muscles and your skeleton, improving both strength and flexibility, it also works your mind. This is because the principles derived can be applied to everyday life and other exercises.

  4. Dancing- While everyone loves to dance, most do not realize that they are actually working out. This low impact exercise has probably the best appeal because it is fun and the dancer(s) is also getting all the health benefits of a good workout.

  5. Cycling- For those of you who can ride a bike, you already know that while this is fun especially when you are doing it with somebody, you also feel the burn afterwards, this is because it is another low impact method. You can get more health benefits by slowly increasing the length and pace of your cycling sessions.

  6. Yoga- This low impact workout is very beneficial as it can improve both your physical fitness and your general wellbeing. It helps develop strength, balance, flexibility and also lifts your mood.

  7. Weights- Majority of weights, especially the ones done at home like the kettle bells, are low-impact, but they still cause to sweat a lot, burn unwanted fat and keep the body toned'

Regardless of whichever low impact exercise you prefer, they are simply the best as this is the best way to start your fitness journey and stay on it longer.
