What you probably didn't know about this severe headache

Statistically, women are three times more likely than men to have migraines. And the reason for this is yet unknown.

A typical migraine does not only affect one-half of the head, it is debilitating in nature and also last from two to 72 hours. And sometimes, it is associated with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light, sound, or smell.

Though migraines are different in nature, the most common types are classic migraines and common migraines.

However, family history is one of the most common risk factors for having migraines.

Symptoms of Migraine

It has been observed by both patient and doctor that a migraine may begin one to two days before the headache itself. This is period or stage is known as the migraine prodrome stage.

Although not everyone, some people may experience an aura after the prodrome stage. An aura causes visual, motor, or speech disturbances, such as:

After the prodrome stage… Comes the attack phase. And this phase is the acutest or severe of the phases when an actual migraine occurs.

Symptoms of the attack phase can last anywhere from four hours to three days. Although the symptoms of a migraine usually vary from person to person, the following are most likely to be experienced:

After the attack phase, the postdrome phase is the phase that comes next. Here a person will often experience changes in mood and feelings, which can range from feeling euphoric and extremely happy to feeling very fatigued and apathetic.

How to treat migraine?

Be its prevention or treatment, medications can be very helpful once it occurs.

However, it should be stated here that, it is your doctor and not you that will decide what medication to prescribe based on the severity of the headaches and any of your other health conditions.

Over-the-counter medicines may provide relief as well.
