Apparently, Matchy-Matchy makeup is a thing [Video]

Once upon a time, matching makeup and accessories or clothing would have been so stale but thanks to recent fashion trends, it has become all the rave.

Matchy-matchy makeup

The matchy-matchy makeup trend has taken off in recent months, thanks to street-style stars from New York City to Paris.

While coordinating your lipstick with your sunglasses and dress sounds like it could run the risk of turning into a fashion disaster, there's definitely a way to get it right.

"Wearing a lipstick that matches your shoes is just as much of a fashion choice as putting on a necklace or a pair of earrings," says makeup artist Dick Page. "It pulls together your entire look."

Case in point are models, Karlie Kloss and Shanina Shayk, who both chose to match their eyes to their dresses, albeit in two very different ways, at a party last night in Cannes.

Technically, Kloss matched her dress to her eyes. Her aquamarine Oscar de la Renta gown matched the color of her eyes exactly, making them appear even lighter and brighter than usual.

All she needed was some black liner and mascara to frame her eyes and further intensify the colour.

Makeup artists often say that black is one of the best ways to enhance blue eyes.

Model Shanina Shaik took a different approach and matched her eye shadow to her berry-colored dress, a risky move seeing as pink shadow can be extremely hard to pull off.

She kept the intensity of the color on the top outer half of her eyelids, making the look a bit easier to pull off.

A hint of pinkish-purple liner on the lower lashes, a coat of black mascara, and a hint of white highlight in the inner corners added extra insurance that her eyes wouldn't look bloodshot throughout the night.

What also makes these matchy-matchy looks work is that both models kept their hair simple and their bling to a minimum, skipping necklaces and opting for jewelry in silver and clear crystal.

Page's advice about matching makeup is seeing it as an accessory of its own; anything you wear that's sparkly, dangly, or flashy will wind up weighing down your whole look.

So here's a video  tutorial to guide you when pulling off the Matchy-Matchy makeup trend.
