Shopping for skincare/beauty products should be done bearing in mind expert advise and useful handy tips.

With beauty and skincare products, it's best to know the ingredients and have a prior knowledge on what works for the type of skin (skintype could oily, dry, sensitive or combination) one is shopping for.

In some cases, products may not work on a certain skintype because they are not meant for that skin type (not because the products don't work) and in some cases using the wrong products might end up giving the skin horrible reactions or further damage.

If you have dry or sensitive skin (and even oily skintype because you don't want to strip off the entirety of its components), these ingredients are best avoided in products.

1. Fragrance

Heavily perfumed/fragranced products tend to be drying and irritate the skin. It's best to go for products without fragrance/natural ones. As much as possible, stay away from heavily perfumed skincare products as most of them contain some form of drying agent.

2. Alcohol

Alcohol is a major ingredient in skincare products and while the littlest percentage might work for oily skin, it's best to avoid using it topically. Look out instead for products without alcohol or ones with extremely little percentage.

3. Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a common ingredient in products to treat acne and while it works well to keep skin soft and smooth, it's a 'no no' for dry and sensitive skin and it's best used under strict expert supervision.

4. Retinoids

Retinoids are great skincare ingredients for treating acne, wrinkles and they are raved as one to keep skin looking youthful but they can come too harsh on the skin and in some cases can cause serious irritations.

They are best left prescribed by expert in tailored quantity for the skintype it's meant for.
