The men accused of killing an Igbo trader in Kano State have been remanded in prison custody by a court.

The five suspects in the brutal murder of a female Igbo trader in Kano State on June 2, 2016, over an alleged blasphemy, has been ordered remanded in prison custody by a State Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, July 21, after they were denied bail.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that the accused, Dauda Ahmed, Abdulmumeen Mustafa, Zubairu Abubakar, Abdullahi Abubakar and Musa Abdullahi, were arrested on June 10 after they allegedly hacked the 74-year-old woman, Madam Bridget Agbahime, to death, over allegations she had blasphemed against the Islam religion after she reportedly stopped an Hausa man from performing ablution in front of her shop at the Kofar Wambai Market in Kano city.

The suspects were charged with inciting, disturbance, culpable homicide, joint act and mischief, in the event leading to the murder of the old woman who hailed from Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.

In making his ruling, the presiding judge, Chief Magistrate Muhammad Jibril, said the court, under Section 361 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, had the discretion to hear the bail application but had no power to grant the accused persons bail.

“Though, no material evidence to give the court, first information report is simply information.

It shows the jurisdiction of a court to admit an accused person to bail, only when there is no evidence to prove the accused person committed an offence."

Jibril therefore, denied the accused bail and ordered that they be remanded in prison while he sent the case file to the State Ministry of Justice for legal advice and adjourned the matter to August 18, 2016 for further mention.
