Two post-graduate students from the University of Lagos, Akoka, have been reported dead after drowning at a beach party marking their friend’s birthday.

The incident happened on Sunday, June 5, 2016, at Elegushi beach in Lagos.

According to Punch, the deceased, Adesola Ogunmefun and Funmi Odusina, who are graduates from Covenant University, Otta, were about to finish their Master’s Degree in International Law and Diplomacy, when the incident occurred.

The pair was reported to be having fun with the celebrant, Bolu, when they were all overpowered by the water current, off to the Atlantic Ocean.

Unfortunately, only Bolu survived the incident.

The news concerning the death of the young ladies was met with sadness, especially among the school peers.

An anonymous lamented to Punch about the absence of life guards at the beach, which according to her led to the death of her colleagues.

She said, “Elegushi Beach collected money from them before they entered. In a beach, the regular thing is to have life guards, drugs and ambulance.”

“If they had those things, my friends will still be alive. It was their negligence that led to their deaths.“

“The management of the beach should send an apology to the families and the beach should be shut by the government until it has life guards and wave alarm system, among others.”

“Funmi was very brilliant. Sola and Funmi just finished their theses in UNILAG, where they were studying International Law and Diplomacy.”

According to Punch, SP Dolapo Badmos, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, said that investigations has commenced into the death of the women.
