'I killed my husband because he used to beat me often' - Killer wife

For turning his wife into his punching bag, a young man has paid with is life.

For 27-year-old Folashade Shodiya, the best way to defend herself from her husband, Jude Igbedion, 39, who had turned her into his punching bag, beating and abusing her at will, was to stab him to death.

The ugly incident had shaken the sleepy Owutu community in Ikorodu area of Lagos State, when it was reported on 19th November, 2014, when the couples Balogun Street residence a tourist center as many residents trooped to witness the sordid scene.

The police from the Owutu Police Division had quickly gone in to arrest her to avoid a certain lynching from the angry crowd.

But Shodiya, a clothes seller, has been trying to extricate herself from the murder rap hanging on her neck by claiming that she killed her husband in self-defense after they got into yet another fight bothering on financial matters.

In her statement to the police, the Ogun State born lady explained that when the beatings she suffered from her husband reached a level, she thought of taking her life and drank a poisonous substance though she survived that time.

Hear her:

"I had dated my husband for about seven years now. The only child I have for him, named Amanda, will be a year-old this January.

In 2009, we started living together, but we were not legally married. He had a habit of beating me over trivial issues. Sometimes, he would send me out of the house, and I would pack to my father’s place in Abeokuta.

Two or three days later, he would show up and started begging them to release me. Around November 2014, he started a fresh round of beating. On November 11, I wanted to take my life because of the maltreatment I suffered. I took poison and expected to die, but neighbours came to my rescue and I eventually did not (die).

While beating me, he usually told me that the reason he married me was to give him children and nothing more.

On the day of the incident, at about 9am, there was a quarrel, during which he grabbed a baby hangar and began to beat me. I ran to our kitchen and picked a knife to scare him. I stood at the door with the knife. As he opened the door, his chest met the object; he fell and started to bleed.

I did not deliberately kill my husband. That was why I did not run away. Instead, I called my neighbours for help, and we tried to rush him to a hospital, but he died on the way."

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident, adding that the case had also been transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department for further investigation.

Warning: men, do not beat your wife or you may end up dead and buried!
