2 Nigerians to be executed in Indonesia for drug trafficking

Despite knowing that Indonesia has a capital punishment for drug trafficking offences, some Nigerians still smuggle drugs into that country.

According to media reports in that country, two Senegalese, one Zimbabwean and four Chinese were also on the list of those who will be felled after a court of appeal upheld the sentenced handed down on them by a lower court last year.

The Central Java Police spokesman, Liliek Darmanto, confirmed that authorities were preparing a new round of executions, explaining that on the death row are also one Pakistani, five Indonesians, one woman and four men, are also scheduled for the execution.

Darmanto said no date for the execution had been set, but that 150 police shooters had been appointed to carry out the task.

“They have practiced for days, so that the execution can be conducted any time. Under Indonesian law, each convict would face a squad of 10 shooters."

Despite the fact Indonesian and most Asian countries still uphold the death sentence for drug trafficking, many Nigerian traffickers still smuggle drugs into that country.

Since taking office in 2014, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, has taken a tough stance against drug trafficking, saying that the country was facing a drug emergency, and last year alone, 14 convicts were executed while at least 121 people are currently on death row, mostly convicted of drug-related crimes, according to the Justice Ministry.
