What should we expect from this new city?

There have been whispers about a new city. You may have heard about it – or maybe not. It has been on the lips of a few people recently.

A city is coming

A new city is on the horizon according to what I hear - designed by culture and legacy. I honestly don’t know where this city will be or what it will look like but I sure hope it will be a manifestation of our new dreams and old accomplishments.

Whatever it is though, any new city is a welcome development. New cities have sprung up time and time again in human history to celebrate the vibrancy of a culture and signify a new dawn. We all want something new, exciting and thrilling especially when the old has become comfortable, dull and easy going.

For many Nigerians who have been used to the old ways with little or no infrastructure. Whether it is a public sector initiative or private sector led, we hope the city brings with it a new taste of life and living - one we shall always cherish.

Why do we need a new city in the first place when the old city has worked fine for us over the long years? Do we really need another city? The old one is working just fine. Yes, it is not without its cracks and flaws, but over the years we have come to love this place. It has been a place of comfort, a familiar abode for many generations.

You see, we cannot move forward if we continue to hold on to places, things and memories from the past. We have to tell new tales and sing new songs. We can’t start a new chapter of our lives in an old city that is crumbling more and more every day. Aren’t you tired of the long queues, traffic and bad roads? Aren’t you tired of the old way? You definitely are.

If we’re going to have a new city here’s what I expect beside the concrete blocks that it represents – a city where no one will miss out because they will always be welcome. Where no one will be left out of its goodness. The rich, poor, young, old, man, woman will be part of the city on the horizon.

When it finally comes, we hope it is captivating and welcoming enough. We hope it keeps offering us new experiences, sounds, and tastes till our heart leaps with undeniable joy.

We can’t wait.
