There were a lot of controversies this year, everyone was bashing each other. This list picks out the top ten controversial moments in our pop culture.
Let's not lie. We all love a good controversial story and 2016 had a lot of them. This year had more controversial pop moments than most years one can think of.
2016 was the year of social media drama, social media mad moments and heavy baby mama drama. Pop culture had a load full of these events and they truly shaped and influenced our conversations for a larger part of the year.
With so much excitement in one year it was kind of hard getting the top ten controversial moments in pop culture but we did it.
You can read these moments below;
In 2016, there was no story that was bigger than Tiwa Savage and Tee Billz’s marriage drama. On the fateful day of April 28, 2016, Tee Billz blasted his wife Tiwa Savage on his Instagram page and also accused her of having sexual relations with her label mates Dr Sid, Don Jazzy and Nigerian pop legend 2face Idibia.
A day later Pulse exclusively obtained a Tiwa Savage interview where she spoke explicitly about her damaged marriage with Tee Billz. The video would go down in Nigerian history as one of the fastest watched videos on YouTube. In the video she spoke about Tee Billz's infidelity, his alleged stealing of her money, alleged cocaine use amongst other things. This was such a huge and controversial moment in Nigeria's pop culture for 2016.
2016 started on a very hot note when Nigerian rap superstar Olamide and Mavin boss Don Jazzy clashed on the stage of the Headies. When Lil Kesh was snubbed in the Next Rated category and the award was given to Reekado Banks of Mavin, Olamide was enraged.
When Adekunle Gold got on stage to get his award, Olamide took time out to express his mind about the way the industry has treated him and his artistes.
Don Jazzy took this as a diss and when he got on stage to pick up his award he took shots at Olamide. The situation blew up from there and spilt to social media. When it looked like things were about to be really serious, Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote intervened.
On December 31, 2015, Ovation publisher Chief Dele Momodu exposed Davido and his family for trying to travel with his grand niece out of the country to America without the consent of his niece- Davido’s baby mama.
This move by Dele Momodu started a war that centred on baby napping. Accusations were thrown from both sides, the Adelekes and the Momodus. Things got ugly real quick with Davido accusing his baby mama of smoking weed near his daughter, therefore, jeopardising her health.
After much public mudslinging, a truce was called. Davido would still go ahead to diss Dele Momodu on two memorable guest verses.
These two celebrities had a serious ‘Tom & Jerry’ relationship going on. To say they are enemies is an understatment.
The beef between the two famous Nigerians started when Linda Ikeji revealed that Wizkid had fathered a second child and further claimed that he was as a deadbeat father.
Wizkid didn't take likely to this and took his pound of flesh when Linda Ikeji had her fake Birkin bag drama. Linda Ikeji fired back by posting on her blog that Wizkid has been evicted from his mansion in Lekki. The pop star would go on to make threats at the blogger online which saw him invited to the police station. They settled things amicably but Linda Ikeji has so far snubbed any story about Wizkid. The cold war goes on.
We had seen this in 2014 but 2016 was the real deal or so it seemed. It seemed the pop group had its biggest challenge when member Peter Okoye said he wanted out of the group because of manager Jude Okoye’s counterproductive ways of handling the group's business.
This move triggered a month of brothers fighting brothers on social media. Fans cried their eyes out begging the group not to split. After much pressure Peter, Paul and Jude Okoye succumbed and agreed to stop attacking each other publicly. After radio silence for a while, they came back with another chart-topping single. Some said that was the plan all along. Who truly knows what happened.
These two former friends went at each other's throats with subs from early on in the year. They both tried to outdo each other on the pettiness scale.
In August 2016, Freeze kind of took things too far when he posted a photo of him kissing Basketmouth's wife on the cheek. The move was highly controversial. It led to rumours that he was fired from Cool FM. He denied this when Pulse had an exclusive interview with him a few days later.
January was a hot month for entertainment beef. Weeks after Dammy Krane claimed Wizkid stole his songs, the pair met at Quilox night club and things got a little bit bloody.
Nigerian footballer Obafemi Martins was holding a party in the club which had a lot of celebrities in attendance. At around 4a.m, sources said Star Boy singer Wizkid showed up at Quilox. According to an eyewitness who spoke to NET “When Wizkid entered the club, it seemed he saw Dammy Krane but didn’t go to meet him, then about 15 minutes later, it seemed Dammy was showing him some attitude, then Wizkid went to meet him. The next thing we saw everywhere had scattered. Wizkid broke a bottle on his head before bouncers separated them.”
Several people who witnessed the incident claim that Wizkid started the fight before bouncers came into separate them. Dammy Krane was left bleeding but peace prevailed a few days later when both acts called a truce.
The story of Wizkid having another child from a woman known as Binta Diamond Diallo was big on the Internet.
The story came early in the year and it was one of the first controversies Wizkid stepped into in 2016. Binta Diamond Diallo claimed that Wizkid was the father of her newborn son and popular sites in Nigeria ran wild with it.
Later in the day, Wizkid released a confusing statement from his management concerning the issue. Binta Diamond Diallo would go on to say that Wizkid wasn’t living up to his duties as a father. Wizkid hasn't made any public statement concerning his alleged son till today.
This was one of the pettiest beef of 2016...well at least on one side. When Toolz was about to get married she reportedly told Gbemi about the Olumofin brothers who she wasn't too enthusiastic about attending her wedding. Gbemi took to social media and tagged the brothers as social climbers.
The Olumofin brothers were not having it. They took straight to Instagram to lambast the popular OAP. They posted so many unprintable things about her. They took the word petty to an all time low and still attended Toolz's wedding. Like we said, petty.
The gifted singer has been in so many controversies in 2016 but none tops the cake than his baby mama scandal. A lady named Uju Stella claimed that Burna Boy was responsible for her pregnancy.
Burna Boy came out to deny that he did not impregnate Uju Stella because he only slept with her once. The drama has also brought Burna Boy’s mother into the forefront. This time around Uju Stella wasn't pregnant and she was doing it for notoriety. Burna Boy was innocent after all.
