Nausheen Rahman, 28, was initially charged with concealment of a human corpse before the body of the dead newborn baby was found outside her condominium around 11.30am on Saturday.
She was charged with second-degree murder after a medical examiner determined that the baby was alive before it was thrown in the trash, according to NBC 4.
The New York Police Department said they found the newborn baby unconscious and unresponsive.

Emergency crews pronounced the child dead at the scene.
Rahman went to Staten Island University Hospital Friday evening and told staff that she was bleeding as a result of giving birth, police said.
The woman originally told hospital staff that she gave birth five days prior and 'threw away' the baby, according to the New York Post.
