The Chateau Louis XIV as it is called, was completed in 2011 but shows off all the hallmarks, furniture and decor of an opulent 17th Century estate.
The same property was close to playing host to reality star, Kim Kardashian's wedding to rapper hubby, Kanye West.
The property is reported to be located somewhere between Versailles and Marly-le-Roi on 57 acres of lush, walled off greenery.
Its selling price is said to have overshadowed that of the previous holder of the record of the most expensive property in the world, a London penthouse reported to be selling at $221million.
Sources close to the sale revealed to Bloomberg that the mansion was sold to a buyer from the Middle East, in a deal brokered by Christie’s International Real Estate.
According to reports, the property boasts a lavish ballroom, underground nightclub, a cavernous wine cellar, a squash court, home cinema and an underwater room complete with fishes swimming inside its transparent walls.
The mansion itself was finished with brilliant gold features, marble floors and intricate murals that bear some resemblance to Michelangelo's masterpiece in the Sistine Chapel.
