The picture of a man with thousands of lice swimming on his hair and scalp has gone viral.

Posted online, the video is a timely warning to what can happen if a louse infestation is left to fester untreated.

The man's scalp looks red raw in the video, with experts warning that many beasts piercing the skin with their blood-sucking bites would likely cause inflammation, severe pain and infection.

The video has racked up more than 1.2 million views since it was posted on YouTube on September 8.

Reacting to the footage, one person said: "I have never seen lice before, watching this made me throw up..."

Another added: "Forget treatment, shave your head already."

Many questioned why the man would allow the infestation to get so bad.
