A former Deputy Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon. Okon Uwah, has been killed in strange circumstances shortly after concluding a campaign tour of Ward Three in Ukanafun local government area in the state, on March 18, 2015.

Hon. Uwah had decamped to the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC), and was gunning for another stint in the House to represent the Ukanafun State Constituency.

It was learnt that the late Uwah was harassed at a rally earlier in the day by some youths over the sharing of some money donated by the leadership of the party in the state as the youths did not apparently come to terms with the sharing formula. In the process, the politician, according to insiders, could have been hit by a charm because at a meeting held at the residence of one of his in-laws later that day, he slumped and died on the spot.

But the official statement by the state police command has it that the money was actually donated by the deceased and in the ensuing melee over the sharing formular, the crowd surged to the venue and when Uwah tried to move away from the stampede, he fell down and was trampled by the surging crowd.
