65-yr-old grandma flogged in public over witchcraft allegations

A 65-year-old woman in Sokoto State was publicly flogged after she was found guilty of practicing witchcraft.

Zainab Lebbo was flogged publicly after being accused of practicing witchcraft

It was a show of shame after a 65-year-old grandmother in Sokoto State was sentenced and given 12 lashes of the cane in public after she was accused of witchcraft by her daughter-in-law.

The sentenced was handed down on the woman, Zainab Labbo, a resident of Isa Town in the state, by the District Head of the town, Alhaji Nasiru Malami Ahmed, who said he was acting in accordance with the sharia laws.

It was gathered that Lebbo was reported to the village council her son's wife who accused her of using witchcraft to bewitch her son who in turn was maltreating the wife.

After the council sat at the palace of Alhaji Ahmed, Lebbo was found guilty of practicing witchcraft and using magical powers.

Though the old woman denied the charges and pleaded her innocence, the village head ordered her to flogged by his palace guards.

But residents of the town are not happy with their head, stressing that he has continued to abuse his powers and playing God where he takes the laws into his hands as well as unleashing a reign of terror on his people.

A resident said:

"Our people are under siege by the gross and jungle justice of the palace authorities but nobody was ready to speak out before now.

We are just courageous enough to invite you people (journalists) to Isa town and see things for yourselves. We have decided to tell the whole world what we are passing through."
