A 45-year-old man has been docked for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl.

Rape should be condemned in totality

Bowale Adedeji, a 45-year-old man, has been arraigned before an Ota Senior Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ogun State for allegedly raping a 12-year-old girl, reports the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The suspect, a resident of 23 Banjo Street, Ijoko Road, Ota, allegedly lured the girl into an uncompleted building and defiled her, on December 5, 2015 at about 9pm.

The police prosecutor, Sergeant Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused was apprehended by passersby while committing the crime and handed over to the police, an offence that contravened Section 218 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

When the charge of defilement was read to him, Adedeji pleaded not guilty and the presiding judge, Senior Magistrate, S.O. Banwo, admitted him to bail in the sum of N350,000, with two sureties in like sum.

Banwo said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and show evidence of payment of tax to the Ogun State Government in the last one year, with one of the sureties being a civil servant not below grade level 13 in the employment of Ogun State.

The case was adjourned till January 29 for hearing.
