419 Native doctor arraigned by EFCC following N2.5m scam

The accused was slammed with a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretence.

A native doctor, Bala Tangalu, has been arraigned by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for falsefully obtaining a sum of N2.5 million from a petitioner, Dozie Ugonna.

The accused stood trial before Justice A. B. Mohammed of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Jabi, Abuja on Wednesday, February 22, 2017.

He is facing  a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretence according to a report compiled by the Daily Post News.

A court statement in respect to the offence reads:

“Bala Tangalu, Ataye (still at large), Nnamdi (still at large) Peace (still at large) and Linda (still at large), in the year 2016 at Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court with intent to defraud obtained the total sum of N2,540.000 (Two Million, Five Hundred and Forty Thousand Naira Only) from one Dozie Ugonna under the pretence that you are a native doctor a.k.a Babalawo and the monies were for purchase of materials to neutralize some harmful charms contained in a carton filled with United State Dollars, which pretence you knew to be false.”

A request for the accused to be remanded in prison until trial begins was made by Elizabeth Alabi, a counsel to the EFCC following Tangalu's not-guilty plea.

The presiding judge however granted him bail in the sum of N2 million as well as the inclusion of two sureties who will pay an equal amount.

A trial of the accused has been set for Monday, March 20, 2017 according to reports.
