Husband in trouble following wife's death after 6 months of marriage

A middle aged man simply as Niyi Olukuyide, is in serious trouble after the death of his 28-year-old wife, Olusayo, in mysterious circumstances, with the family of the woman suspecting he may have beaten her to death and fled the scene before he was arrested.

In a report by Saturday Punch, the young lady who was observing her National Youth Service Corps in Zamfara State, had only been married to Niyi six months ago but that the young family had been having issues shortly after that.

According to the report, Olusayo’s lifeless body was discovered in the family's home in Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Wednesday, November 11, with the whereabouts of the husband not immediately known.

Neighbours who had seen the couple the night before, noticed that there was no activity in the apartment and on checking closely, the realised the doors were locked and after repeated knocks and calls, they decided to break the door only to find the corpse of the woman sprawled on the floor of the sitting room.

The husband was nowhere to be found and his mobile phone was switched off when they tried calling him.

But when he finally replied calls late in the day, he gave contrasting locations of his whereabout, at one time saying he was traveling to Togo, Ghana and Ondo State.

Olusayo's family members said that she had only gone back to her husband a couple of days earlier after they had some disagreement over money and he beat her up.

Her distraught father, Pastor Rotimi Gbadebo, narrated what he knew of the matter to The Punch:

“In August, they had a fight and I had to call them to a meeting along with the family of the husband. I warned them that I must not hear of any fight between them again.

She left for her husband’s house on Tuesday. She called for financial assistance and I promised her that I would send the money the following day. That was the last time I heard from my daughter.

The man had been misbehaving all along. He would sometimes abandon the house and leave my daughter uncared for, for days at a time.

Sometimes, my daughter would be sick and he would tell her to go back to her parents’ house to get treatment; the husband neither visited nor called for three weeks.”

But the Olukuyide family too have come to the defence of their brother whom they say had no hand in Olusayo's death as she had been living with health issues.

“My brother was nit at home at the time his wife died. He had the intention of going to Ghana initially but financial challenges had been delaying him. We have visited the house where his wife died with the policemen investigating her death and some of the neighbours attested to the fact that Olusayo was always sick.

The deceased always complained of headache, which they said sometimes disoriented her. The truth is, my brother did not spend enough time with her during their five-year courtship. Her family rarely allowed them to see each other, which was why he did not know about her health challenges.

My brother kept asking about the result of the medical test they were mandated to do by the church before their wedding. He kept asking but they did not show him,” a brother of the suspect, Olayinka said.

Meanwhile, Niyi has been arrested and in presently in custody while the police have intensified their investigations.
