But for the timely intervention of operatives Anambra State Police Command, there would have been a total breakdown of law and order in the commercial city of Onitsha after a police officer shot and killed a truck driver over a disagreement.
Onitsha in turmoil as policeman kills truck driver over argument
A truck driver has been shot to death by a police officer during a disagreement in Onitsha.
According to eyewitnesses, the policeman was on guard duty at the Sabmiller Nigeria Limited, Onitsha, the makers of Hero Lager Beer, when he shot the driver who is an employee of the company in the premises of the outfit.
The witnesses said that trouble started when the truck driver refused to stop and submit to a check by the policeman at the gate of the company. This led to a hot exchange and a scuffle which led to the killing.
The incident almost led to chaos as many truck drivers operating around the bridgehead axis of the Onitsha-Asaba Expressway, blocked all the major roads to protest the death of their colleague.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), in charge of Okpoko Police Division which is responsible for the area, CSP Emeka Ugwu, confirmed the incident and said that the killer policeman had been arrested and the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka for further investigations.
