A police officer in Ebonyi State has been arrested for allegedly defiling a 7-year-old girl.
The confirmation was made by the no-nonsense Police Commissioner in the state, Peace Ibekwe Abdallah, who told newsmen that Ewerem who is attached to the Central Police Station, had defiled the girl at his residence at No. 29 off Nibo street in Abakaliki, the state capital, where he lives with her parents.
The suspect was said to have lured the girl into his room by telling her to onion for him but when the girl went to deliver the item to him, he closed the door and forcefully abused her.
Some residents within the neighborhood say the Ewerem is fond of abusing teenage girls but that no one had the courage to report him due to his status as a police officer.
CP Abdallah who has continued to insist that the command would not tolerate any errant officer, said the suspect would not go scot free as the command was committed to sanitizing the force and ensuring that acts contrary to the modus operandi guiding the constitution of the Nigerian police were decisively dealt with.
“The case was reported to the Central Police Station, CPS, yesterday by the parent of the victim and going by the statement of the victim, she was fingered by the policeman.
We don’t tolerate such act in the Nigerian police force. Whether rape or not, any act of defilement is a very serious crime which must be dealt with. The suspect is under detention.”
