51-yr-old man sent to jail for pouring acid on love rival

A 51-year-old man who poured acid on his rival will spend three months in jail.

A 51-year-old man, Anthony Ede, will spend three months in jail after an Abuja Grade 1 Area Court sitting in the Federal Capital Territory, found him guilty of bathing his rival, Leonard Iwu, with acid.

Ede who is a business man residing at Dutse Zone 3, according to prosecutor, DSP Anthony Egwu, was angry that Iwu was going after his girlfriend and attacked him with the substance, thereby committing a crime contrary to section 246 of the Penal code.

DSP Egwu told the court that the Iwu, a resident of Dutsen Markaranta, had reported at the Dutsen Alhaji Police Station on October 9, that while he was at a drinking spot with his girlfriend, the accused came and started insulting him without provocation.

He added that when Iwu tried to inquire the cause of Ede's action, the accused poured a substance, suspected to be acid, on his (Iwu's) body, and as a result, he sustained various degrees of injury.

The prosecutor further said the accused confessed to the crime during police investigation.

When the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded guilty, confessing that he carried out the act because he was angry with the complainant for snatching the girl he intended to marry, having lost his wife.
