Policeman reportedly stabs 'agbero' to death

A policeman reportedly stabs a motor park tout after an argument at Ojodu Berger bus stop.

A deadly and bloodied knife

According to Punch, one of Ahmed's friends stopped the 14-seater bus and demanded to pay N100 from the driver. The driver did not budge and said he wasn't paying the motor park tout.

An argument quickly ensued between the driver and the tout popularly called agbero in Lagos. The policeman got off from the front seat where he was to meddle in the arguement.

Ahmed who was nearby went to the scene to find out what was going on. "The policeman suddenly brought out a very sharp knife and stabbed him (Ahmed) in the stomach. He held the policeman for a while and slumped. He stood up, staggered and slumped again" said Goke Adeleke who was an eye-witness.

”The policeman put on trousers usually worn by riot policemen,” Adeleke observed. Ahmed was quickly taken to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Center at Ojota Tollgate but was declared dead on arrival.

The drama didn't stop there as the Rapid Response Squad reportedly fired tear gas in order to rescue the policeman. This was witnessed by one of Ahmed's friends Agberoko.

Speaking in Yoruba he said "The RRS officers shot into the air and also fired tear gas canisters to disperse us when we intercepted the policeman. They rescued and took him into the Armoured Personnel Carrier stationed in the area."

When Ahmed was brought back to the bus stop, his friends became violent and vandalized the bus.

Ahmed was described in glowing terms by a nearby trader named Taibat Adejare. ”He just came out around 4pm today (Saturday). He ate a snack with a bottle of drink. It was about an hour after he came out that the incident happened.

”He was very peaceful and jovial. He didn’t force drivers to pay. The policeman stabbed him with a poisonous knife.

”I was joking with him some days ago that he should go and marry. He said he was planning marriage already and that it would come up in December" she said in tears.

While the officer was said to be serving in a command outside Lagos, Dolapo Badmos, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer said the suspect was not a policeman and the corpse has been placed in a morgue.
