The victim, Luna Estefania had died in agonising pain after she had been discovered starving and severely ill at their home in the city of Chihuahua, Southern Mexico.

Luna's mother identified as  Mariana Lizeth Salas Hernandez, 20, was arrested after neglecting her daughter who had reportedly been eaten alive by ants, with concerned neighbours reporting to the police that the toddler was often left alone.

Hernandez had been found guilty of murder following the death of Luna who had died two months after she had been discovered and hospitalised.

Further investigation into the case reveals that Hernandez had simply not taken care of her daughter, neglecting to feed her for 15 whole days at the end of April and beginning of May in 2014.

Luna had reportedly been left paralysed as a result of a fall she had suffered while her mother had not been paying attention, also sustaining a head injury while two months old.

Following her discovery by the police and social service workers, Luna had been revealed to be severely malnourished and covered in ants which had eaten parts of her body.
