Recalling the ordeal Eleanor Jones, 22 said: 'I was just waiting for a taxi home with my friend and there were three men standing on the corner.

'They were all being a bit loud, but there was one in particular who seemed to take a disliking to us'

Miss Jones said the man started joking about her clothing and footwear. In the shocking act that followed, the man then hit her to the ground despite his friends trying to restrain him.

Miss Jones, who lives in Stoke-on-Trent, said: 'It all happened so quickly. There were a few passers-by who tried to help me out and I was covering my eye. I was in shock.'

She was rushed to Royal Liverpool Hospital where X-rays confirmed she had a fractured eye socket.

She said she will be pressing charges and had to take time off work as she could not drive. Her eye is still bleeding on the inside and she has been given painkillers and eye drops.

Detective Inspector Phil Mahon, from Merseyside Police, said: 'This appears to have been a completely unprovoked attack and we are determined to bring the person responsible to justice.'
