An Ikeja Magistrates' Court in Lagos State on Tuesday slammed a N500, 000 bail on a landlord's son, Nurudeen Oseni, for beating and injuring a tenant in the mouth.

Magistrate A. A. Adesanya aside slamming the bail also ordered that the accused should produce two sureties in like sum, and adjourned the case to June 1 for mention.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oseni, a resident of No. 26, Ayoola Sehinde St., Mafoluku in Oshodi, Lagos State, is being tried for a breach of the peace and assault.

The prosecutor, Insp. George Nwosu, told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 9 at his residence.

He said that the accused, unlawfully, assaulted his tenant, one Mr Olaide Afolabi, by punching him in the face which caused harm to his mouth.

Nwosu said that the accused went to the complainant's room accusing him of hitting the wall of his room.

"The accused accosted the complainant, attacking him wrongly of hitting the wall of his room.

"The complainant told the accused that he was neither a boxer nor a mad man that will be hitting a wall, that he was not the one.

"The accused got angry and descended on him through beating and in the process caused damage to his nose and mouth,’’ Nwosu said.

The offences, Nwosu said, contravened Sections 166 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

NAN reports that Section 171 provides that if convicted of the offence, the accused would be liable to three years’ imprisonment.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read to him.
