A 25-year-old man, Rasaki Arowolo, who allegedly obtained N170,000 from a woman on the pretext of providing trucks to convey her goods to her house, was on Wednesday brought before an Apapa Magistrates' Court, Lagos.

A resident of Ajegunle area of Lagos, Arowolo, is facing a charge of obtaining money under false pretences.

The prosecutor, ASP Soji Ojaokomo told the court that the accused committed the offence on Jan. 16 at TinCan Island, Apapa.

He said Arowolo collected N170,000 from the complainant, Tinuola Adeleye, with a promise to provide three trucks to convey her goods from Ogere in Ogun to TinCan Island, Lagos.

"Instead of providing the trucks as promised, the accused converted the money to personal use. When Adeleye did not get a feedback from the accused, she decided to confront him and ask for her money.

"The accused, however, failed to refund her money,’’ he said.

Ojaokomo noted that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 312 prescribes a 15-year jail term for obtaining money under false pretences.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Senior Magistrate, Mr T. Abolarinwa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to Aug. 5 for mention.
