The Ghanaian Navy has arrested 8 Nigerian sea robbers who were planning to attack a cargo vessel, MT Mariam, and captured all eight bandits.
8 Nigerian pirates arrested in West Coast
The Ghanaian Navy have arrested 8 Nigerian pirates who had hijacked a Nigerian vessel and were planning to attack it.
According to news reports in a Ghanaian newspaper, Daily Graphics, the pirates were armed with dangerous weapons and could have injured the crew members but for th timely intervention of the naval officers who stormed the ship.
The Public Relations Officer of 1 Garrison of Ghana Armed Forces, Lt Maxwell Asola, reported that all 8 pirates were Nigerians.
His report further stated that the owners of the hijacked ship had alerted the Ghana Navy about the incident and requested for assistance.
Lt Asola told the paper that the arrest took place after the owner of the vessel, in lodging the complaint, said the pirates told him via telephone that they wanted to use the vessel to carry out an attack and hung up, which prompted the owner to approach Ghana Navy for assistance.
